President John Dramani Mahama has stressed the importance of accountability and robust institutions for Ghana’s governance and economic recovery as he presided over the swearing‑in of the country’s new Auditor‑General, Dr Pamela Graham.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Mahama said effective management of public resources is central to restoring macroeconomic stability, expanding social investments and accelerating national development. He argued that integrity, efficiency and fiscal discipline in public financial management are prerequisites for sustained progress.
“The strength of every democracy is measured not only by those who govern but also by the institutions that hold governments accountable,” the president said.
Mr Mahama called on the Auditor‑General’s Office to ensure audit reports go beyond mere statutory compliance. He urged auditors to produce practical findings that strengthen governance, improve internal controls and eliminate waste, turning audits into tools for better public sector performance rather than routine exercises.
The president’s remarks come as his administration pursues measures to stabilise the economy and scale up public investment. He linked those goals directly to the quality of oversight institutions, saying transparent and effective auditing will help build public trust and ensure resources reach intended programmes.
Dr Pamela Graham, whose oath of office formalises her stewardship of the public audit function, inherits a mandate to enhance the relevance and impact of audit work, officials said. Government and public sector leaders will now look to the Auditor‑General’s Office to reinforce accountability across ministries, departments and agencies.
