Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has called for additional financial support and stronger partnerships to enable the government to complete the proposed University of Science and Technology in Damongo.

He made the call during discussions with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Cong Song, on efforts to advance the establishment of the university.

The project is currently supported by a US$30 million grant secured by the Government of Ghana from China in 2025 to commence construction. However, Haruna Iddrisu indicated that the funding would not be sufficient to complete the university.

According to him, establishing and fully equipping a new university is expected to cost more than US$100 million, creating the need for additional funding and strategic partnerships to deliver the project.

The Minister explained that the proposed university is expected to serve as a centre of excellence in Science and Technology, with a particular focus on emerging fields such as Robotics, Digital Sciences and Artificial Intelligence.
He said the institution would contribute to developing the skills required to position Ghanaian students and graduates to participate effectively in the country’s growing digital and technology-driven  economy.

The Education Minister further disclosed that the government has a broader plan to establish universities in regions that currently do not have tertiary institutions, as part of efforts to expand access to quality higher education.

He said the initiative is also intended to promote balanced national development by ensuring that opportunities for tertiary education are not concentrated in only a few parts of the country.

The Chinese Ambassador, Cong Song, commended Haruna Iddrisu for his leadership and commitment to advancing Ghana’s education transformation agenda. 

He reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Ghana in education and other areas of mutual interest, describing the partnership as important to deepening bilateral relations and supporting development in both countries.
