FDA warns against using cement to preserve beans following viral video

85

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a stern warning against a viral video circulating on social media that claims to demonstrate the preservation of beans using a white powdery substance suspected to be cement.

In a press release dated February 16, 2026, the FDA clarified that the method shown in the video is not part of accepted Ghanaian agricultural or food preservation practices.

The Plant Protection and Regulation Services Directorate (PPRSD) of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture does not recommend or endorse the use of cement or any unapproved substances for preserving farm produce.

A review of the video revealed several unsafe and unhygienic practices. The narration, which is not in any Ghanaian language, translates to instructions involving direct contact with chemicals using bare hands, and the person handling the beans is seen standing on them without protective clothing. Such methods, the FDA notes, are contrary to acceptable food safety standards.

The Authority, together with its stakeholder institutions, emphasised that food preservation practices that compromise public health are strictly discouraged. Farm produce aggregators and retailers are urged not to engage in or promote unsafe methods.

Consumers are advised to report any suspicious food handling or preservation practices to the FDA for appropriate investigation and enforcement.

The FDA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health by ensuring that all food products on the Ghanaian market meet approved safety and quality standards.
