The Member of Parliament for Walewale Constituency, Dr. Mahama Tiah Abdul Kabiru, has launched a GH¢1 million revolving fund to support women in small-scale businesses across the constituency.

The initiative, dubbed the "Faako Fund", was launched on 1st September, 2026 as part of activities marking the MP's birthday and is aimed at providing affordable and accessible capital to women who struggle to access funding from traditional financial institutions due to high interest rates and collateral demands.

Addressing constituents and the media at the launch in Walewale, Dr. Abdul-Kabiru Mahama said the fund was inspired by his personal experiences growing up in a rural community, where he witnessed the resilience of mothers who engaged in petty trading and other small businesses to support their families and educate their children.

According to the MP, the Faako Fund will operate as an interest-free, revolving facility with flexible repayment arrangements tailored to the turnover of each business to ensure sustainability.

He disclosed that the initiative will be linked to the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) to provide beneficiaries with business management training and guidance to help them build sustainable and viable enterprises.

On the criteria for selection, Dr. Mahama emphasized that the fund will focus on women with seriousness, dedication and a clear commitment to growing their businesses.

"Of this particular program, my emphasis is on people with the seriousness, people with the dedication, people who want to ensure that their businesses grow and that's going to be my focus. If you can pay back, if you can support the program, who knows that can even change the person's mind to support my party or to be aligned with my political ideology," he stated.

He added that the fund will be open to every interested person in the Walewale Constituency, regardless of political affiliation, provided they are willing to take advantage of the opportunity and comply with the repayment plan.

The Walewale legislator noted that the fund has a seed capital of One Million Ghana Cedis (GHS 1,000,000.00) and will initially target at least 100 women engaged in petty trading and other micro-enterprises.

He said there are plans to scale up the number of beneficiaries to about 300 women within the next two to three years, depending on the success of the first phase and the repayment cycle.

Dr. Mahama expressed optimism that the Faako Fund will improve household incomes, strengthen small businesses and contribute significantly to the economic well-being of women and families in the Walewale Constituency.

Traditional leaders, women groups and party executives who attended the ceremony commended the MP for the intervention, describing it as timely and life-changing for women entrepreneurs in the area.
