Otto Addo’s second stint laid bare as mixed record ends in dismissal

173

The numbers behind Otto Addo’s second spell as Black Stars coach underline a tenure that promised stability but ultimately fell short of expectations.

Addo has been relieved of his duties by the Ghana Football Association following a difficult run of results, with his overall record reflecting inconsistency across 22 matches in charge.

During this period, Ghana recorded eight wins, five draws and nine defeats, scoring 35 goals and conceding 28. The team collected 29 points from a possible 66, averaging 1.32 points per game.

While Addo guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 World Cup, performances across competitive and friendly matches raised concerns, particularly against stronger opposition.

His victories came against Mali, Central African Republic, Madagascar, Comoros, and Chad, results that helped steady the campaign at various points.

However, Ghana struggled to impose themselves against several opponents. The Black Stars failed to register wins against Nigeria, Sudan, Niger and Angola, each faced twice, as well as Japan, South Korea, Austria, Germany and Uganda.

Those results, coupled with the failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, weighed heavily on the decision to part ways with the former Ghana international.

The recent March friendlies appeared to be the final blow, with a heavy defeat to Austria followed by a loss to Germany exposing persistent defensive issues and lack of cohesion.

Addo’s exit leaves Ghana searching for a new direction just months before the World Cup, where they will face Panama, Croatia and England in the group stage.

The FA is expected to name a successor soon as preparations continue for the tournament in North America.
