Saboba, Northern Region – August 9, 2025:

The Paramount Chief of the Saboba Traditional Area, Ubor Mateer John Bowan Sakojim IV, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians, describing it as a national calamity with far-reaching impact.

In a statement issued August 08, 2025, the Paramount Chief conveyed his condolences to President John Dramani Mahama, the Government of Ghana, and the bereaved families.

The fatal crash occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Dampia Forest Reserve in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

This historic calamity, which has not been experienced in recent times, resulting in the death of two sons of the north, Hon. Alhaji Muniru Limuna and Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six gallant and illustrious sons of our nation, is a soul-crushing tragedy, Ubor Sakojim stated.

The loss, as announced by the government, were men of great courage and intellect, serving our motherland with unwavering dedication.

Among the deceased were Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment; Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The group was reportedly engaged in ongoing national efforts against illegal mining before the crash.

The Paramount Chief urged the government to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident to prevent a recurrence.

He also appealed for the tragedy to strengthen national unity and renew the fight against illegal mining.

May the Almighty God grant them eternal peace and paradise, and comfort the bereaved families and the nation. We must draw strength from this tragedy, fortify our unity and stability, and intensify our fight against illegal mining, he said.

Ubor Sakojim stressed that the incident, while deeply painful, should not discourage the nation from confronting the menace of galamsey, which has long threatened Ghana’s environment and socio-economic stability.

Flags continue to fly at half-mast across the country as the nation mourns the loss of some of its most dedicated public servants.
