Ghana’s Black Maidens began their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 3–0 defeat to Norway in their opening Group C game in Morocco on Sunday.
Joe Nana Adarkwa’s side conceded twice inside the opening 13 minutes at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, leaving them chasing the game before they could settle.
Isabella Lepore opened the scoring in the sixth minute with a powerful long-range strike that hit the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line.
Seven minutes later, Maia Melgård doubled Norway’s advantage. After receiving a pass from Hanne Nesse near the edge of the penalty area, she shifted onto her left foot and curled her effort into the net.
The Black Maidens improved after the break and had an opportunity to reduce the deficit when substitute Cynthia Obinsrewuo went through on goal. However, Norway goalkeeper Erla Braathen denied her, keeping Ghana two goals behind.
Any hopes of a comeback ended in the 80th minute when Melgård scored her second of the evening to complete Norway’s victory.
The result leaves Ghana third in Group C without a point. Brazil lead the standings following their 4–0 victory over Canada, with Norway second on goal difference.
Attention now turns to Wednesday’s meeting with Brazil, when the Black Maidens will look to get their campaign back on track.
Ghana will then face Canada in their final group fixture on October 24, with Adarkwa’s side needing an improved performance to strengthen their chances of progressing.
