Nasia Star Rice CEO calls for stronger policies to boost local rice consumption

  • Nasia Star Rice CEO calls for stronger policies to boost local rice consumption

The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Tamanaa Company Limited, producers of Nasia Star Rice, Alhaji Shaibu Braimah, has called for stronger government support for Ghana’s local rice industry, including improved market access, stronger links between farmers and processors, and increased use of locally produced rice in public institutions.

He said consistent implementation of policies supporting locally processed rice was necessary to strengthen the domestic rice value chain and create a more favourable environment for local producers.

Alhaji Braimah made the call during a visit by a delegation from the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority (GIPA), led by the Head of the Investment Promotion and Business Development Division, Mr Kwame Kesse-Agyepong, to Tamanaa Company Limited’s processing facility in Nasia.

The visit formed part of preparations for the North East Regional Investment Roadshow, an initiative to identify and promote investment opportunities in the region.

During the engagement, the Tamanaa CEO emphasised the need for policies that improve the competitiveness of locally processed rice and expand its market, particularly through public institutions.

He also called for stronger partnerships between rice farmers and processors to improve the supply of paddy rice and support the growth of domestic processing businesses.

The delegation toured the company’s processing facility, which has the capacity to process up to 10 tonnes of rice per hour and dry 33 tonnes.

The facility highlights the potential for agro-processing investments to add value to locally grown agricultural produce and support industrial activity in the North East Region.

Mr Kesse-Agyepong commended Tamanaa Company Limited for its investment in rice processing and assured the company that the concerns raised during the engagement would be communicated to relevant government stakeholders.

The engagement forms part of GIPA’s efforts to identify regional investment opportunities ahead of the Invest Ghana Summit (IGS), scheduled for November 16–17, 2026.

The summit is expected to showcase investment opportunities across Ghana and promote investments aimed at supporting sustainable growth.

Alhaji Braimah’s call places renewed attention on the policy and market conditions facing local rice processors, particularly the need to translate domestic production and processing capacity into stronger demand for Ghanaian rice.
