Samia Yaba Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, says the Nkrumah family has returned to Nkroful with a renewed commitment to contributing to Ghana’s development and preserving his legacy.

Speaking at the 2026 NkrumahFest in Nkroful in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, held to mark Dr Nkrumah’s 117th birthday, Ms Nkrumah apologised to the people of Nkroful for the family’s prolonged absence from their ancestral home.

She said painful experiences surrounding her father’s  political life had left the family traumatised and fearful.

She recalled witnessing her father return home wounded after an assassination attempt, saying the experience deeply affected the family.

“We saw our father covered in blood, walking into the house after one assassination attempt on his life. Forgive us if we stayed away. We were traumatised, we were scared, we were confused,” she recalled.

Ms Nkrumah, however, said the family had now returned with a renewed commitment to contributing to Ghana’s development and promoting national unity.

“The good  news is that we’ve come back. And we want to make a contribution to Ghana’s progress, to Ghana’s development, and to Ghana’s unity,” she assured.

She said the family’s return was also aimed at preserving and promoting Dr Nkrumah’s ideas among the younger generation.

“We are coming back to recognise our father’s work. We are coming back to appreciate his ideas, and we are coming back to make sure that those ideas never die, but rather, they nourish us and give us the courage to make Ghana better,” she said.
