The National Ambulance Service (NAS) says it continues to respond to more than 300 emergency cases daily across the country despite challenges affecting the availability of some ambulances.

The Service said it operates in all 16 regions, with its national emergency number, 112, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

NAS made the disclosure in a statement issued on Monday, September 21, 2026, in response to a GHOne TV investigative report on the state of emergency medical response in Ghana.Ghana Showbiz News

The Service acknowledged footage showing a number of ambulances grounded, but said most of the vehicles captured had either been involved in accidents or were awaiting major repairs at its central workshop.

According to the NAS, 307 Mercedes-Benz ambulances procured in January 2020 have operated continuously across the country, with some subsequently developing mechanical faults, suffering wear and tear or being involved in road traffic accidents.

“Despite these challenges, NAS remains operational in all 16 regions and continues to respond to an average of over 300 emergency cases daily nationwide,” the statement read.

The Service said it is working with the Ministry of Health to expedite the procurement of spare parts and operationalise regional maintenance centres to reduce the time ambulances remain out of service.

The NAS also said it is implementing a clinical competency enhancement programme for Emergency Medical Technicians, including intravenous therapy, to address gaps identified in recent inquiries.

Management welcomed the investigative report and said it remains committed to transparency, accountability and the provision of timely, safe and efficient pre-hospital emergency care.
