The Chief of Kumbungu in the Kumbugu district of the Northern Region has praised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for what he described as “transformative” development in the district, ahead of the ground‑breaking for a new 24‑Hour Economy Market.
The comments came during a courtesy call by the Northern Regional Minister ahead of the official sod‑cutting ceremony for a market project, which local leaders say will boost commerce and create jobs.
The chief welcomed recent interventions that he said demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving socio‑economic conditions. He singled out the creation of the Kumbungu District Assembly and the decision to include Kumbungu among beneficiaries of the flagship 24‑Hour Economy Market programme as major milestones.
“There was no Kumbungu District Assembly. We were under Tolon and known as Tolon‑Kumbungu,” he said, recalling long‑standing efforts to secure a separate administrative status. “It was under the NDC government that Kumbungu became a separate district, allowing us to stand on our own.”
He said the new market will enhance commercial activity, improve livelihoods and help position Kumbungu as a commercial hub in the Northern Region. The chief also thanked the District Chief Executive, the Northern Regional Minister and the NDC leadership for what he termed “visible development” in the area.
Speaking of personal ties, the Paramount Chief noted he attended university with the late former President John Evans Atta Mills.
The traditional authority pledged full support for the market project to ensure its successful implementation for current and future generations. Officials say the initiative forms part of a broader push to stimulate local economic growth and expand infrastructure across the region.
