Two remanded over alleged sale of unregistered drugs

60

Two men have appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly dealing in unregistered drugs following their arrest by Police.

Bright Akaglah, a 32‑year‑old driver, and Iddrisu Alhassan, a 34‑year‑old businessman, have been charged with abetment of crime and offering for sale unregistered drugs. Their pleas were not taken.

The court declined a bail application by defence counsel, stating that investigations were ongoing and granting bail could interfere with the process.

“Bail is hereby declined. Accused are hereby remanded into police custody to reappear before the court at the next adjourned date. It is hoped that the accused persons will aid police investigations,” the court said.

The case was adjourned to April 1, 2026.

The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Raymond Ackon, said the complainants were personnel of the National Highway Patrol Unit of the Police Headquarters, Accra.

Akaglah, a resident of Aflao, and Alhassan, a resident of Nima, were arrested on March 13, 2026, at about 21:40 hours.

Police, acting on intelligence, intercepted Akaglah at the Tema Motorway while driving a Benz vehicle with registration number GE 6862‑W, suspected to be conveying illicit goods from Aflao to Accra. A search revealed 10 brown cartons of Timaking 250mg and other items.

Akaglah told Police that “a certain man in Aflao gave them to be delivered to Alhassan in Accra for a fee of GH¢500.”

Akaglah later led Police to Pig Farm in Accra, where Alhassan was arrested while on a Honda motorbike, preparing to take delivery of the items.

On March 14, 2026, the accused and exhibits were handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Unit at the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters for further investigations.

The cartons, when opened in the presence of the accused, were found to contain 500 packets of Timaking 250mg, comprising 50,000 smaller boxes.

Akaglah, in his caution statement, denied ownership of the items, claiming he had been contracted by an unidentified person in Aflao.

Alhassan admitted ownership and mentioned one Rashid, based in Aflao, as his source of supply.

The prosecution said efforts were underway to arrest Rashid and other accomplices, while the exhibits would be forwarded to the Food and Drugs Authority for analysis.
