Poor public sector pay fuels corruption – John Kufuor

52

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has identified poor remuneration within public institutions as a key factor contributing to corruption, urging policymakers to confront the issue as part of broader governance reforms.

The former President noted that rapid technological advancement and the growing complexity of modern society have also made corrupt practices more sophisticated.

According to him, while science and technology continue to progress, some individuals misuse their intelligence and technical knowledge for personal gain rather than for the benefit of society.

In an interview with JoyNews, he urged the government to strengthen systems that detect and address corruption, warning that individuals will continue to exploit loopholes unless institutions constantly improve their safeguards.

“We are in the era of science and technology. Science keeps researching and refining things, and people who tend to be bright, not all of them will use their brilliance for fair and good purposes. So, sophistication is really deepening corrupt practices.

“People will still try to get away with their smartness. A poor remuneration system, which our society somehow finds shy in tackling, is one of the sources of corruption, given our situation,” he said.
