The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has charged the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal, to deliver on the mandate given to him by the electorate.
Baba Jamal was sworn into office on Tuesday, March 10.
The speaker told him after the swearing-in ceremony that he would personally visit the constituency to campaign against him if he failed to deliver.
I will hold you accountable on behalf of the people of Ayawaso East. If you don’t, I can assure you I will be there to campaign against you, the Speaker said.
Mr Jamal secured victory in the Ayawaso East by-election held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The by-election was organised to fill the parliamentary vacancy created following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January.
According to the official results, Baba Jamal polled 10,884 votes, defeating his main challenger, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who obtained 4,009 votes.
Other candidates in the race included independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda, who garnered 1,885 votes. Ibrahim Idrissu secured 43 votes, while Kanor David obtained 104 votes.
In total, 16,928 valid votes were cast in the election, with 120 ballots rejected, bringing the total votes cast to 17,048.
Following the Electoral Commission’s declaration of the results, Baba Jamal expressed gratitude to the people of Ayawaso East for the confidence reposed in him.
