The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly marked Ghana’s 69th Independence Day with a vibrant celebration at Jubilee Park, bringing together students, community leaders, and stakeholders to reflect on national achievements and address pressing social issues facing the metropolis.

The event, attended by representatives from 13 schools—comprising primary, junior high, and senior high institutions—saw enthusiastic participation from students, each school presenting about 30 pupils, split equally between males and females. The celebration aimed not only to commemorate Ghana’s independence but also to foster civic responsibility among the youth.

Outstanding Performances Recognized

The event featured competitions across school categories, with awards presented to top performers:

  • Senior High School: Tamale Girls Senior High School emerged as the top school.
  • Junior High School: Ambaria Junior High School took the first position.
  • Primary School: Presbyterian Experimental School was recognized as the best.

Second-place awards went to Ghana Senior High School, Tamale Metro Girls Junior High, and Little Way Primary School, respectively.

A Call to Action: Combating Illicit Drugs and Promoting Sanitation

In his address, the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon. Abu Takoro, emphasized the importance of addressing the rising menace of illicit drug abuse among the youth, linking it to increasing crime rates within the metropolis. “The abuse of hard drugs among our young people is escalating and directly contributing to the rise in criminal activities. It is imperative that we come together to curb this dangerous trend,” he stated.

Takoro also highlighted the significance of maintaining a clean environment, commending the government’s national sanitation day initiative. He called on residents to participate actively in the monthly clean-up exercises, especially on the first Saturday of each month. “A clean environment is a healthy environment. If every citizen commits to regular cleanings, we can significantly reduce filth and disease in our neighborhoods,” he urged.

Community Engagement and Stakeholder Participation

The celebration also served as a platform for stakeholders, including traditional Chiefs and local assembly members, to reaffirm their commitment to community development. Awards were presented to outstanding students and schools, encouraging continued excellence and civic responsibility.

Looking Ahead

The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly’s celebration underscores the importance of youth engagement in nation-building, as well as the collective responsibility to promote health, safety, and cleanliness. With ongoing initiatives targeting drug prevention and sanitation, the Metropolitan Assembly aims to foster a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Tamale for all residents.
