Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has said that there is a particular kind of leadership Ghana must usher in, building on our collective endeavours—one that understands the difference between sounds and signals.
He made the remarks while speaking at a webinar of scholars and public intellectuals on the topic “Ghana in Uncertain Times: Independence, Crisis, and Possibility”.
There is a particular kind of leadership Ghana must usher in, building on our collective endeavours—one that understands the difference between sounds and signals. One that resists the lure of slogans and insists instead on evidence, on historical precedent, and on the patient work of institution building, Kufuor said.
He further emphasised that governance must be guided by knowledge and experience, warning that leadership without such grounding could imperil national development.
My own political tradition has always held that governance without knowledge is a gamble, he added.
For his part, President John Dramani Mahama noted that the world is currently experiencing complex challenges that require thoughtful responses.
These are indeed uncertain times, globally and locally. We face climate emergencies, technological disruptions, and shifting geopolitical dynamics. Yet the uncertainty need not be despair. History teaches us that Ghana often finds strength in moments of challenge, he said.
Reflecting on Ghana’s independence, President Mahama said the country’s liberation struggle was driven not only by political action but also by intellectual leadership.
On March 6, 1957, our founders did not simply declare independence; they affirmed the power of ideas. Our liberation struggle was shaped by scholarship, debate, and intellectual courage, he said.
