VEPEAG pushes local tomato production after Burkina Faso attack

76

The Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association of Ghana (VEPEAG) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening local tomato production following a deadly terrorist attack in northern Burkina Faso that claimed the lives of seven Ghanaian traders.

The association said the move aims to reduce risks for traders who travel to neighbouring countries to source tomatoes for Ghana’s domestic market. By improving local production, VEPEAG hopes to create a safer, more reliable supply chain for consumers and businesses alike.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 17 February, and signed by Dr Felix Kamassah, VEPEAG president, the association called on the government to upgrade and expand irrigation facilities nationwide. According to the statement, such investments are crucial for achieving consistent and surplus tomato production capable of meeting Ghana’s demand.

“We strongly believe that the resources and expertise required for the production of high-quality tomatoes are found here in Ghana,” the statement added.

VEPEAG’s renewed push comes as the association seeks to protect Ghana’s tomato supply, ensure the safety of traders, and strengthen the country’s agricultural resilience in the face of regional security threats.
