Zambia waives duty on personal Fugu imports

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has issued a public clarification on the importation of Ghana’s traditional fugu attire, stating that individuals bringing in the garment for personal use will not be required to pay duties and taxes.Ghanaian cultural products

However, the authority stressed that commercial quantities imported for resale will attract duty charges.

In a Facebook post, ZRA explained that the tax treatment of the attire depends largely on whether it is imported for personal use or for business.

“A Fugu imported from Ghana for personal use doesn’t attract duties and taxes but 20 of those imported for reselling will have duty charged,” the authority stated.

It further noted that where the fugu is produced locally in Zambia, applicable domestic taxes would apply.

“If made in Zambia, applicable domestic taxes such as Turnover Tax are paid,” ZRA added, using the hashtag #KnowYourTax.

The clarification comes amid heightened public attention on the Ghanaian fugu, following a recent online exchange between Ghanaians and Zambians over the attire after President John Dramani Mahama was seen wearing it during his visit to Zambia.

Some social media users in Zambia reacted by jokingly calling the fugu a “blouse”, comments many Ghanaians saw as ignorant.

The traditional smock, widely associated with northern Ghana and commonly worn for ceremonial and cultural events, quickly became the centre of social media discussion, with many Ghanaians defending its cultural value and significance.

The conversation later evolved beyond cultural pride into a wider discussion about African identity, fashion, and the growing popularity of the garment across borders.

Influencers and commentators launched campaigns like “Fugu Friday” to celebrate and promote the attire. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema responded with humor, saying he was happy with the cultural moment and plans to order more fugu for himself.
