Tamale, Jan. 13, 2026 -The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team on Tuesday carried out a large-scale intelligence-led patrol across the Tamale Metropolis, resulting in the arrest of six suspects for alleged drug-related offences and the retrieval of several exhibits suspected to be illicit substances.

The operation, led by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, formed part of sustained efforts by the Ghana Police Service to suppress drug peddling, drug abuse and other criminal activities within Tamale and its surrounding communities.

A total of 105 officers were deployed for the exercise, supported by 10 service vehicles, including a Black Maria and an Armoured Personnel Carrier, to ensure effective coverage and rapid response.

Prior to deployment, officers received a detailed briefing from the Command, with emphasis placed on professionalism, discipline and strict adherence to human rights.

The patrol commenced at the GRA Mango Forest, a location identified by police intelligence as crime-prone.

Three individuals, Jafaru Abdul Atik, Sulemana Abdul Gafar and Sulemana Imoro, were arrested for allegedly using and possessing dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

The team later extended the operation to Lamashegu, where Issahaku Adam was arrested for being in possession of a substance suspected to be hashish.

At the Tamale Taxi Rank, police acted on intelligence suggesting the sale of opioids.

A controlled operation led to the purchase of two tablets of Tramadol 120mg from a suspect, Yakubu Sulemana, after which he was immediately arrested.

Police said the suspect claimed the tablets sold were his last stock.

Further intelligence directed officers to a provision shop at the Salaga Bus Station.

Although the shop owner fled upon the arrival of the police, a search of the premises led to the recovery of several items, including wraps and containers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, bottles of cough syrup, rolling papers, mobile phones, cash amounting to GHS 363.00 and a Ghana Card bearing the name Ninkpe Nsagnan.

All retrieved items have been retained for evidential and forensic purposes.

Police reported that the overall security situation during the operation remained calm and stable, with traders, motorists and commuters going about their lawful activities without disruption. No casualties were recorded.

The suspects arrested have been handed over to the Sakasaka Police Station for further investigations and possible prosecution.

DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil said the successful operation has further strengthened public confidence in the police and served as a strong deterrent to drug-related and other criminal activities within the Tamale Metropolis.
