Yendi/Bimbila, December 10, 2025 – A major security operation conducted by the IGP Special Operations Team in the Yendi and Bimbila municipalities has led to the arrest of multiple suspects, the seizure of unregistered weapons, and the recovery of quantities of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
The operation, part of an intensified nationwide strategy to curb robberies, kidnappings, drug trafficking and other crimes posing threats to national security, involved 48 personnel under the command of Chief Inspector Abdullai Tahiru and Chief Inspector Desmond Gamba. Seven police vehicles, including a Black Maria for transporting suspects, were deployed.
The team began its activities in Yendi, conducting highway and community patrols in areas identified as crime-prone.

Intelligence-driven searches were carried out at locations suspected of harbouring drug peddling and contraband operations. Several individuals were searched and later released after no illegal items were found on them.
In a continued effort to maintain operational momentum, the team proceeded to Bimbila, where they conducted patrols on major roads, inner routes and the Bimbila–Salaga stretch.
A snap checkpoint mounted at the Bimbila main Market and the Yam Market proved pivotal in uncovering illegal ammunition in circulation.
Police intercepted a suspect carrying 25 pieces of AAA live cartridges.
The suspect claimed the cartridges were meant for his father’s hunting activities and led the team to his residence, where officers confirmed the existence of a locally manufactured hunting gun.
Further interrogation helped the police trace the supplier of the cartridges.

The supplier was arrested after admitting to the sale, and a search of his home uncovered one suspected unregistered pump-action shotgun, 191 AAA live cartridges and 55 pieces of 76mm BB cartridges.
Meanwhile, separate intelligence guided officers to a provision shop suspected of serving as a distribution point for Indian hemp.
Seven individuals were arrested at the location, and quantities of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp were seized.
All suspects, along with the retrieved weapons, ammunition and suspected narcotics, were transported to the Bimbila District Charge Office for detention and further investigation.
The items seized have been handed over to investigators for safekeeping and forensic examination. The team later returned to Yendi to continue patrols, maintaining visibility and community reassurance. No casualties were recorded during the operation.

Chief Inspector Abdullai Tahiru, reporting on behalf of the IGP Special Operations Team, described the exercise as a significant breakthrough in disrupting the circulation of illicit arms and narcotics in the area.
He noted that the sustained, intelligence-led approach adopted by the team reflects the police administration’s strong commitment to enhancing security and public safety in the Northern Region.
The successful operation is expected to further boost public confidence as security agencies intensify efforts to combat crime and protect communities across the region.
