The University of Ghana (UG) has made history after winning the 2025 Pan-African Universities Debate Championship (PAUDC) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The victory is the University’s first, following earlier attempts in 2019, 2021, and 2022. The team delivered an outstanding performance across nine preliminary rounds and three knockout stages to secure the continental title.
Ghana’s presence at the competition extended beyond the championship win, with four debaters placing among the top ten on the continent. Joel Aboagye ranked 1st, Jedidiah Henaku Budu placed 4th, Ann Aseye Donya came 5th, and Andrew Kwasi Kattah placed 10th.
Team coach, Elisha Owusu Akyaw, who led the delegation, said the victory was deeply meaningful for the debate society.
“I am really excited for this win. It is historic for our debate society, not just because we have done what hasn’t been done before but also because it is the beginning of many more records to be broken,” he said.
The triumph marks a defining milestone for the University of Ghana Debate Society, reflecting years of preparation, strong institutional support, committed coaching, and a new generation of debaters determined to elevate Ghana’s intellectual competitiveness across the continent.
As the 13-member delegation returns to Accra, the win stands as both a historic breakthrough and a signal of greater achievements ahead.
