Accra, August 19, 2025 – The Electoral Commission of Ghana has officially announced that a parliamentary by-election for the Tamale Central Constituency will be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, following the unfortunate passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim.

In a statement signed by Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Commission explained that the by-election is being conducted in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the filling of a parliamentary vacancy through a by-election.

The EC indicated that nominations for prospective candidates will open from Monday, September 8 to Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at the Tamale Metropolitan Office of the Commission. Submissions will be accepted between 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm each day.

Interested candidates are required to download nomination forms from the Commission’s website (www.ec.gov.gh) between August 19 and September 10, 2025. Forms must be endorsed by at least two registered voters as proposer and seconder and supported by 18 additional registered voters from the constituency.

Candidates must submit their completed forms in quadruplicate, endorsed with their consent, and accompanied by two passport-size photographs (red background, full face, and ears visible).

The filing fee has been set at GHC 10,000 per candidate. However, female candidates and persons with disabilities will pay a reduced fee of GHC 7,500.

All completed nomination forms are expected to be delivered in quadruplicate, the statement emphasized, urging the public and prospective candidates to take note of the timelines and requirements.

The Tamale Central by-election is expected to attract keen political interest, as parties position themselves to win the vacant seat created by the death of the former MP.
