Tamale, August 15, 2025: The Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has fulfilled a pledge to take over the tuition payments of forty-seven (47) continuing medical students in the Tamale Central Constituency, a humanitarian initiative started by the late MP and Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
On Wednesday, Hon. Iddrisu released GH₵188,000 to cover the students’ fees for the current academic year.
The beneficiaries, drawn from various universities across the country, are expected to receive this support until they complete their medical training.
The Education Minister made the commitment during the final funeral rites of the late Dr. Murtala Muhammed, vowing to keep alive his vision of ensuring that young people, particularly in the north, are not denied higher education due to financial constraints.
This is not just about paying fees, Hon. Iddrisu said. It is about investing in hope, sustaining the dream of the late Murtala Muhammed, and bridging the doctor-patient gap in the Northern Region.
Dr. Murtala Muhammed’s scholarship programme aimed to produce more doctors and improve healthcare delivery in the region.
By continuing the initiative, Hon. Iddrisu has pledged to “immortalize the memory” of his late colleague through practical support for the next generation of health professionals.
Abdul-Ganiyu Sandow, CEO of the Haruna Institute, commended the gesture, describing it as a reminder that leadership is measured not only by positions held but by the lives touched.
It is expected that this noble act will inspire others to rise to the call of service, he said.
May the memory of the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed continue to inspire us to serve humanity.
