Tamale, April 25, 2025 — His Majesty Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari II, King and Overlord of Dagbon, has made a heartfelt appeal to the doctors and staff of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) to immediately resume emergency services, which have been suspended due to recent tensions at the facility.
Addressing a gathering of hospital leadership, staff, and the press at the premises of the TTH in Tamale, the revered traditional leader acknowledged the essential sacrifices of health workers, praising their unwavering dedication to providing life-saving care to the people of Dagbon and the wider Northern Ghana region.
“We come in peace and humility, bearing the concerns of the good people of Dagbon and beyond,” the Yaa Naa stated, noting the deep suffering caused by the disruption of emergency services.
The ongoing crisis at the TTH was triggered by the unavailability of essential supplies and equipment, compounded by a recent unannounced visit by the Minister of Health — an incident that reportedly aggravated tensions between staff and authorities.
His Majesty acknowledged the distress the visit caused and affirmed the legitimacy of the staff’s grievances, pledging to personally convey their concerns to the Minister.
“We understand that an apology from the Minister of Health could be a crucial step towards healing and rebuilding trust,” he said, offering to facilitate dialogue between hospital representatives and government officials to chart a path forward.
Nevertheless, the Yaa Naa implored the hospital’s medical professionals to reconsider their stance for the sake of those in critical need.
“We appeal to your professionalism, compassion, and commitment to the Hippocratic oath… We urge you to find a way to ensure the continuity of essential emergency services,” he pleaded.
The King reminded staff of their roles not just as health professionals but also as vital pillars of the very community they serve and live in.
“My children and grandchildren, I urge you to consider the bigger picture and the impact of the strike on the community. Let us work together to find a solution that prioritizes patient care and addresses your concerns,” he urged.
The Yaa Naa concluded with a prayer for wisdom, empathy, and a sense of duty to guide the hospital staff through these trying times.
The cessation of emergency services at the region’s main referral facility has sparked widespread concern, with many residents and stakeholders calling for swift resolution to prevent further loss of life.
