Ghana’s Apex Court, the Supreme Court (SC), has granted the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its candidates in the Okaikwei North, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, and Techiman South constituencies seven days to file responses to an election petition case involving the Electoral Commission (EC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Supreme Court granted the NDC’s request after its lawyers sought additional time to respond to the EC’s reply to the application.
The ruling party and four of its 2024 parliamentary candidates are challenging an Accra High Court ruling on the matter. The High Court had ordered the EC to collate and declare results for the four constituencies.
When the case was called on Thursday, April 3, 2025, the applicants’ lawyers requested additional time to respond to the EC’s reply.
However, counsel for the EC, Mr. Justin Amenuvor, opposed the request, arguing that the original seven-day response window had already passed.
Despite this objection, the Supreme Court granted the applicants an additional seven days to file their responses.
Earlier in the proceedings, the applicants faced difficulties serving the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidates. However, the Supreme Court intervened, ordering substituted service for the NPP candidates.
To date, the EC has declared results for three constituencies, while the results for Ablekuma North remain pending.
