Daboya: Wasipe Traditional Area Refutes Claims Of Settler Farmer Attacks

Daboya, March 19, 2025 – The Wasipe Traditional Council has strongly refuted allegations circulating on social media that settler farmers are fleeing the Wasipe Traditional Area due to fear of attacks by indigenous residents.

In an official statement issued from the Wasipewura’s Palace, the traditional authorities described the video in circulation as a deliberate attempt to undermine the longstanding peaceful coexistence between the indigenous people and settler farmers in the area.

The statement, signed by Jantongwura Peter Awusi Yakubu, Secretary of the Wasipe Traditional Council (WTC), emphasized that the palace has thoroughly reviewed the video and determined it to be misleading and orchestrated to create tension.

“We have lived in harmony with our settler brothers and sisters in this area for centuries without any major issues,” the statement read.

The Wasipewura, Mumuni Anyame Kabasagya II, further clarified that investigations have revealed that those leaving the area are individuals who have refused to pay the required royalties to the Yiram, the Paramount Chief of the Wasipe Traditional Area.

Instead, the statement noted, these farmers opt to pay royalties to other chiefs outside the Wasipe jurisdiction, which the palace views as an unacceptable practice.

The council also accused some settler farmers of refusing to recognize the Wasipewura as the allodial title owner of the land on which they are farming, further complicating the matter.

Despite these concerns, the Wasipe Traditional Council reassured the general public that there is no hostility towards any ethnic group or settler community in the area.

“We wish to assure the public that the Palace is at peace with all other tribes in the area and would not do anything untoward to destroy the peaceful co-existence we have enjoyed over the years,” the statement concluded.

The Wasipe Traditional Area remains committed to maintaining peace and fostering unity among all residents while ensuring adherence to traditional land tenure practices.
