Local Government Service Workers’ Union Declines to Join CLOGSAG Strike

Accra, Ghana – February 21, 2025 – The Local Government Service Workers’ Union (LGSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has announced its decision not to participate in the ongoing strike declared by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG).

In a statement signed by General Secretary Christopher Abakah and National Chairman Engr. Moses Awenkanabah Awarkiruo, the LGSWU emphasized that the industrial action does not align with the union’s current priorities.

Instead, the union reaffirmed its commitment to addressing key issues affecting its members through negotiations and engagement with relevant stakeholders.

The statement highlighted that in 2022, CLOGSAG had filed and won a case at the High Court challenging the appointment of Mrs. Henrietta Lamptey as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.

The LGSWU argued that rather than engaging in strike actions, negotiations and further dialogue would be more effective in resolving concerns related to such appointments.

Following consultations with the National Management Committee and Regional Councils, the LGSWU reached a unanimous decision to abstain from the strike.

The union urged all its members and staff across the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), Regional Coordinating Councils (RCCs), and the Office of the Head of Local Government Service (OHLGS) to continue working as usual.

The union, however, reiterated its commitment to advocating for improved working conditions and an enhanced salary structure for local government staff.

“The fight for an enhanced salary structure and better working conditions remains a priority, and we will channel our energies into productive negotiations rather than industrial action,” the statement read.

The LGSWU called on its members to remain united and patient as leadership continues engagements with the relevant authorities to secure favorable working conditions for all local government service staff nationwide.
