GBC needs support – Afenyo-Markin appeals to government

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has urged the government to provide more support to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to ensure its survival and growth.

Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Afenyo-Markin emphasised that GBC, particularly its television channel GTV, plays a crucial role in reaching remote parts of the country. However, he expressed concern that the state broadcaster is not receiving enough resources to compete with private media houses.

“We all know that GBC is the nation’s number one media house. Every support needs to be given to GTV. I have been watching GTV, and they are one station that is able to reach the remote parts of our country. They need support,” he told parliament on Friday, February 21, 2025.

He noted that while private media houses have been given prominence in state programs, GTV is often left out. He also pointed out that the station no longer broadcasts major live events due to a lack of resources.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin called on the Minister for Communication and Digitalisation to appear before Parliament and explain what steps the government is taking to resource GBC. He praised GBC’s programs, particularly its morning show, GTV Breakfast, which he described as very educative.

“If GBC does not get the support, they are likely to collapse. We don’t want that to happen,” he warned.
