Accra, Ghana – President-Elect John Dramani Mahama has begun the formal transition process following his victory in Ghana’s recent presidential election. This morning, he responded to an invitation from outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for a courtesy visit to the Presidency.
In a statement released after the meeting, Mr. Mahama described the encounter as cordial, adding that President Akufo-Addo briefed him on key national issues, including security and the economy. “Later today, we will inaugurate the Joint Transition Team,” Mr. Mahama announced.
He expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for the congratulatory phone call he received on Monday, calling it “a good mark of statesmanship” and noting it gave him a sense of déjà vu.
Reflecting on the election, Mr. Mahama highlighted Ghana’s resilience and democratic maturity. Democracy and Ghana are the winners following the electoral process, he said.
Despite all the anxieties people had before the election and voting day, Ghana has done it again.
The President-Elect also called for continued collaboration across partisan lines to strengthen the country’s democracy. “We can be sure that our democracy is safe, and by working together across bipartisan lines, we can continue to deepen and consolidate it, he emphasized.
The Joint Transition Team, which includes representatives from both the outgoing and incoming administrations, is expected to oversee a smooth transfer of power in the coming weeks.
Ghanaians and the international community have lauded the peaceful election and transition process, which solidifies Ghana’s position as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
