Tamale – April 25, 2025: Skamed D.I.R.C, a leading biomedical firm, has entered into a strategic partnership with the University for Development Studies (UDS) to establish a state-of-the-art Radiology Research Center at the university’s Dungu campus in Tamale.

The facility is set to become a major hub for medical imaging services, research, and training in Northern Ghana.

The initiative, announced by Mr. Cliff Martins, Project Consultant for Skamed D.I.R.C, seeks to bridge a critical gap in the management of imaging equipment in Ghana, which he attributes largely to inadequate training of healthcare personnel.

“We recognized the need to not only improve access to imaging services but also to develop local capacity. This partnership with UDS is a significant step in that direction,” he said.

The center will offer a comprehensive range of imaging services, including X-ray, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Electrocardiography (ECG), and ultrasound.

Beyond diagnostics, it will function as a center for advanced education and research in radiology, providing hands-on training to students from various health-related disciplines including medical imaging technology, medicine, dentistry, nursing, and midwifery.

As part of the project, Skamed D.I.R.C will construct a lecture hall, library, and hostels to create a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

The initiative is expected to reduce the need for students to seek specialized radiology training abroad, significantly lowering the cost of education.

To ensure global standards in training, the firm plans to bring in experienced lecturers from outside Ghana. The center also promises efficient service delivery, with patients expected to receive diagnostic results within 30 minutes—facilitating timely medical intervention.

Community Impact

The project is anticipated to have far-reaching benefits for the Northern Region and beyond. It will enhance access to quality healthcare, build the capacity of local healthcare professionals, and contribute to socio-economic development in the area.

“The collaboration between UDS and Skamed D.I.R.C will not only advance academic excellence but also directly impact the health and well-being of the broader community,” a statement from the university said.

Construction of the Radiology Research Center is expected to begin later this year, with phased completion over the next 18 months.
