Accra, January 23, 2025 – Democracy Hub, a pro-reform advocacy organization, has announced its intention to sponsor candidates for the upcoming non-partisan Council of State elections.
This move, the organization states, is part of its broader agenda to promote constitutional reform and ensure governance reflects the aspirations of all Ghanaians.
In a press release issued today, Democracy Hub reiterated its long-standing position advocating for the abolition of the Council of State. According to the organization, the Council has become ineffective in its advisory role to the presidency and governance systems.
However, it emphasized that meaningful constitutional change must begin within the framework of the current system, recognizing the Council’s pivotal role in constitutional amendments.
While we stand firm in our call for the abolition of the Council of State, we understand that its current role in the constitutional amendment process cannot be overlooked, the statement read.
This means the composition of the Council is critical in determining whether constitutional reforms succeed or falter.
To ensure the Council does not hinder progress, Democracy Hub is backing candidates who share its vision for transformative governance.
The organization stressed that its involvement in the elections is non-partisan, aiming to protect the Council of State as a space for independent thought and constructive input rather than political agendas.
Democracy Hub assured the public that its candidates were carefully selected based on integrity, vision, and a commitment to justice and equity. The group encouraged citizens to join them in their quest for a fairer, more accountable governance system.
Our participation is not a contradiction of our reformist ideals but a pragmatic move to safeguard the path toward a better future, Democracy Hub explained. Together, we can ensure that no institution ineffective or otherwise derails our collective pursuit of a better Ghana.
The organization reiterated its commitment to reshaping Ghana’s governance structures and urged all Ghanaians to engage in the electoral process, demand accountability, and support candidates who prioritize the country’s best interests.
This latest development underscores the ongoing push for constitutional reforms in Ghana, with Democracy Hub positioning itself as a key player in advocating for transformational governance.
