Put national interest above partisan politics – Bagbin urges MPs

  • Put national interest above partisan politics – Bagbin urges MPs

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged Members of Parliament to demonstrate objectivity, sound judgement and a strong commitment to the national interest in the discharge of their legislative responsibilities.

He cautioned lawmakers against allowing political affiliations and partisan differences to undermine parliamentary business, stressing that the expectations of Ghanaians regarding the work of the legislature remain high.

Bagbin made the appeal in his preliminary remarks when Parliament resumed sitting on Tuesday, November 3.

Addressing members at the start of proceedings, the Speaker reminded MPs that their responsibility goes beyond representing their respective political parties, insisting that they must prioritise the interests of the Ghanaian people in their deliberations and decisions.

He said Parliament remained a critical institution in Ghana’s democratic governance and that lawmakers must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the trust and confidence reposed in them by the electorate.

Bagbin said Ghanaians expect their representatives to exercise sound judgement, respect the country’s constitutional framework and approach their duties with diligence, integrity and a sense of responsibility.

“The expectations of the Ghanaian people are high and rightly so, they expect us to exercise sound judgement, uphold the 1992 Constitution and discharge our responsibilities with diligence, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the national interest.

“Our political differences are real. And in a democracy, they are legitimate. They must not, however, stand in the way of the work we have been sent here to do. I therefore call on all of us to approach this meeting with a new sense of purpose, mutual respect and collective responsibility.”
