Kylian Mbappé struck twice, including a late winner, as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2–1 at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday to revive their La Liga title challenge.
The French forward settled an absorbing Clásico in the 87th minute, ending Barcelona’s perfect league start and reducing their advantage over Madrid to three points.
Madrid arrived knowing defeat would allow their rivals to strengthen their grip on the title race. Instead, they left with a valuable away victory after surviving Barcelona’s second-half response.
Mbappé opened the scoring in the 41st minute, benefiting from an attempted clearance that went wrong for the hosts. Gerard Martín tried to remove the danger from Yan Diomande’s low delivery, but the ball struck Mbappé and flew past goalkeeper Joan García.
Both sides threatened before the interval. Mbappé hit the post, while Lamine Yamal missed a close-range opportunity as Barcelona searched for a quick response.
The hosts eventually drew level in the 61st minute through Raphinha. The Brazilian collected Pedri’s pass and directed his finish through Jude Bellingham’s legs into the far corner, restoring belief among the home supporters.
Barcelona pushed for another goal, but Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin denied Martín with an important save. Lunin was deputising for Thibaut Courtois, who missed the match through illness.
With the contest approaching its closing stages, Madrid delivered the decisive blow on the counterattack.
Bellingham helped launch the move before Eduardo Camavinga advanced into the penalty area and squared for Mbappé to finish into an unguarded net.
The winner also brought up Mbappé’s 100th goal for Madrid, achieved in 116 appearances.
For Barcelona, the result ended a nine-match winning start in La Liga. For Madrid, it transformed a potentially damaging evening into a major opportunity to close the distance on their biggest rivals at the summit.
