Ghana has advanced efforts to address persistent water shortages and improve sanitation in parts of the Northern Region and Savannah Region following a productive meeting between the Finance Minister, Cassiel Ato Forson and European Investment Bank (EIB) Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle on the financing arrangements for the Northern Ghana Water and Sanitation Project.
In a statement, Mr. Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed that the proposed financing package comprises €68 million in grant funding from the European Commission, €30 million from Invest International, a Dutch government initiative, and a €225 million highly concessional financing facility from the European Investment Bank.

The combined package amounts to €323 million and is expected to support interventions aimed at improving access to reliable water supply and sanitation services in Tamale, Yendi and Damongo.
The project is designed to address longstanding water supply challenges affecting the three communities while strengthening sanitation infrastructure and services to improve public health and living conditions.
The European Investment Bank's highly concessional facility, complemented by grants from the European Commission and Invest International, is expected to provide a significant financial foundation for the project's implementation.
The initiative is particularly important for communities in Northern Ghana, where reliable access to potable water and adequate sanitation remains essential to public health, economic activity and sustainable urban development.

The Finance Minister's engagement with the EIB leadership forms part of efforts to mobilise development financing and strengthen international partnerships to support critical infrastructure projects in Ghana.
Further details on the project's implementation schedule, specific infrastructure components and expected completion date were not provided in the statement.
When implemented, the project is expected to contribute to improved water security and sanitation outcomes for residents of Tamale, Yendi and Damongo.
