Late Winner Seals SavannahFest Glory for Gumani

  • Late Winner Seals SavannahFest Glory for Gumani

Gumani FC have lifted the 2026 MTN SavannahFest Football Gala trophy after edging Shishagu FC 1–0 in a tense final played in Tamale.

The match appeared headed for a goalless finish as both teams maintained their defensive shape and cancelled out each other’s attacking efforts. But with the game entering its final moments, Abdul Latif Fuseini produced the breakthrough that decided the contest.

Fuseini’s late goal sparked celebrations among the Gumani players and supporters, while Shishagu were left to reflect on a strong campaign that ended just short of the title.

The final brought the football aspect of the 2026 SavannahFest to a dramatic close after weeks of community competition. The gala featured 16 teams from Tamale and surrounding communities, providing local players with an opportunity to compete before their supporters and showcase their abilities.

The tournament was part of MTN Ghana’s SavannahFest programme, which combined community football with music, health outreach and customer-engagement activities. The 2026 edition also formed part of celebrations marking MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary.

Matches began on September 18 at the Northern School of Business Senior High School park, where the participating communities started their quest for the championship. The competition later moved through its various stages, producing close encounters and strong local rivalries before Gumani and Shishagu secured places in the final.

For Gumani, the title was confirmed by patience and persistence. The team remained in contention despite Shishagu’s determined resistance, and their ability to stay focused until the closing stages ultimately proved decisive.

While the final’s only goal came late, the match reflected the competitive nature of the tournament. Neither team was willing to take unnecessary risks, with the players aware that a single mistake could determine the outcome.

That mistake eventually became an opportunity for Gumani, as Fuseini’s finish gave his side the narrow advantage it needed to claim the trophy.

The closing ceremony also honoured players who made important contributions during the tournament. Marzuk of Sakasaka FC received the award for Best Goalkeeper, while his teammate Abdul Nasir Abdul Fatau was recognised as the Goal King.

Gumani’s Adam Mohammed was named Best Player of the Tournament, adding an individual honour to a memorable campaign for the champions.

The expanded competition involved 16 community teams, a significant increase from the four teams that participated in the maiden edition in 2025. The growth underlined the increasing importance of the gala as a platform for grassroots football and community participation in Tamale.

By the final whistle, Gumani had secured the result they needed. A late goal, a narrow victory and a tournament title ensured that the community’s name would be remembered as the champions of the 2026 MTN SavannahFest Football Gala.
