BONN, GERMANY — September 30, 2026: The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Tamale, Alhaji Adam Abubakari Takoro, is participating in a high-level Networking Meeting of West African–German Municipal Partnerships being held in Bonn, Germany.

The two-day meeting, scheduled for September 29–30, 2026, brings together municipal leaders and stakeholders from West Africa and Germany to exchange experiences, explore practical solutions to common local-government challenges and strengthen partnerships for sustainable municipal development.

The meeting is being held under the theme “Building Tomorrow Together”, with emphasis on the role of municipal partnerships in developing inclusive, sustainable and adaptable local communities.

According to the preliminary programme, the gathering provides a platform for participating municipalities to exchange ideas, learn from one another and co-create solutions to challenges confronting local governments.

The first day of the meeting, themed “The Future is Now,” focuses on shared municipal challenges and locally developed solutions. Discussions and thematic exchanges are designed to facilitate mutual learning among municipalities operating in different social, economic and institutional contexts.

The second day, under the theme “The Future is Us,” centres on strengthening municipalities and partnerships through peer dialogue and collaborative learning, with particular attention to inclusive, sustainable and adaptive partnerships.

For Tamale, the engagement provides an opportunity for the Metropolitan Assembly to exchange experiences with international municipal partners and explore areas where technical knowledge, institutional cooperation and partnerships could contribute to the city's development.

Alhaji Takoro's participation also comes against the backdrop of his broader engagements on local governance and international municipal cooperation. Ghana's Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs lists him as the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tamale for the 2024–2028 period.

Strengthening Tamale's international municipal partnerships

The Bonn meeting could further open avenues for Tamale to strengthen relationships with German municipalities and development stakeholders, particularly in areas relevant to the city's growing urban needs.

Municipal partnerships between Ghanaian and German local authorities have historically provided opportunities for cooperation in areas including urban development, water and sanitation, waste management, climate action, governance and institutional capacity building.

Alhaji Takoro has previously participated in international and national engagements focused on strengthening the role of local government in addressing emerging development and security challenges.

In July 2026, for instance, he took part in a national consultative workshop on the role of local governments in the rehabilitation and reintegration of returnees and former violent-extremist offenders, an engagement supported by the German Federal Foreign Office.

His participation in the Bonn municipal networking meeting therefore forms part of ongoing efforts to position local government as an active partner in international cooperation and knowledge exchange.

Opportunity for Tamale

The engagement presents an opportunity for the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to showcase the city's development priorities, share experiences from local governance in Northern Ghana and identify potential areas for cooperation with German municipal authorities and development institutions.

It could also facilitate discussions around practical interventions capable of supporting urban infrastructure, water and sanitation, environmental management, climate resilience, municipal service delivery and sustainable urban development.

The MCE has previously demonstrated an emphasis on partnerships in local development.

In May 2025, he pledged the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly's support for the maintenance of refurbished educational facilities at Sakasaka, stressing the importance of collective responsibility in sustaining development infrastructure.

The “Building Tomorrow Together” meeting in Bonn is consequently expected to provide another platform for municipal leaders to deepen cooperation, share practical experiences and identify innovative approaches to addressing the evolving needs of their respective cities.

For Tamale, the participation of Alhaji Adam Abubakari Takoro offers an opportunity to advance the city's engagement with international municipal networks and explore partnerships that could translate knowledge exchange into practical local development initiatives.
