Some residents of Sognaayili in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern region have blocked a major access road linking the community to Tamale Township in protest against what they describe as years of neglect and the deplorable condition of the road.

The residents say the deteriorating state of the route has made transportation increasingly difficult, affecting motorists, traders, students, and other commuters who rely on the road for their daily activities.

The residents staged a peaceful demonstration through the streets of Sognaayili to express their frustration over the continued deterioration of the road. As part of the protest, they blocked the major access route, disrupting vehicular movement between the community and Tamale Township.

Some of the demonstrators, whose protest was captured in a video circulating on social media, expressed disappointment over what they described as the prolonged neglect of the community by successive governments.

According to the residents, several appeals have been made to the relevant authorities over the years for the road to be rehabilitated, but little progress has been made.

They argue that the road is critical to the socio-economic development of Sognaayili and surrounding communities, particularly because it provides an important link to Tamale and other parts of the municipality.

The residents are therefore calling on the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly, the government, and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene and commence rehabilitation works on the road.

They believe the rehabilitation of the route will ease transportation challenges, improve access to Tamale Township, enhance road safety, and facilitate economic activities, while also improving residents’ access to essential services.

The residents say they remain hopeful that their demonstration will draw the attention of the authorities and result in concrete action to address the longstanding road problem.
