Athletic Club forward Iñaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his four-year spell with Ghana’s Black Stars.

Williams announced his decision on Thursday, September 11, 2026, drawing the curtain on an international career with Ghana that began in 2022.

The Bilbao-born forward, whose parents are Ghanaian, switched his international allegiance to Ghana in July 2022 after previously representing Spain.

Williams had made one senior appearance for Spain, featuring in a friendly against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016, but later opted to represent the country of his parents.

He earned his first Black Stars call-up in September 2022 as then-head coach Otto Addo included him in Ghana’s squad for pre-World Cup friendlies against Brazil and Nicaragua.

Williams subsequently made his Ghana debut against Brazil on September 23, 2022, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 3-0 defeat in Le Havre, France.

Just two months later, he was selected for Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he featured in all three of the Black Stars’ group-stage matches.

Williams returned to the global stage four years later after being named in Carlos Queiroz’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

At the tournament, he featured twice — starting Ghana’s goalless draw against England and returning to the starting XI for the Round of 32 defeat to Colombia. He was an unused substitute against Panama and Croatia.

That took Williams to five World Cup appearances across two tournaments for Ghana.

His first goal for the Black Stars came in dramatic fashion in November 2023, when his 96th-minute header secured a 1-0 victory over Madagascar in Ghana’s opening qualifier for the 2026 World Cup.

He added his second international goal against Chad in March 2025 during the same qualifying campaign.

Williams ends his Black Stars career with 28 appearances and two goals, having represented Ghana at two FIFA World Cups and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

Despite never establishing himself as a prolific scorer for the national side, Williams was a regular member of the Black Stars setup following his switch and played a role in Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

His retirement brings to an end a four-year international journey that saw him reconnect with his Ghanaian heritage and represent the country of his parents on football’s biggest stage.
