Ghana football association president Kurt Okraku has once again declined to confirm whether he will seek a third term in office, insisting that his focus remains on the job at hand rather than the 2027 presidential election.

Okraku, who has led the GFA since 2019, was asked directly about his plans for the next election but offered no definitive answer.

“I don't know,” Okraku told 3Sports when questioned about whether he would contest for another term.

He added that there was still considerable time before the next elective congress and said his priority was to continue working on the development of Ghana football.

“We have close to 18 months before an elective General Assembly. There is a lot of work to be done,” Okraku said.

“When the time comes, I will speak. When the time comes, the football family will speak.”

Okraku also suggested that his future should not be viewed as a permanent fixture at the GFA.

“At the end, I can never stay here forever and I do not intend to stay here forever. When the time is due, Kurt will fly away,” he said.

The uncertainty comes after GFA Congress approved a major change to the association's statutes in August 2025, increasing the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three.

The amendment received overwhelming backing, with 114 of the 124 delegates present voting in favour. The change means a sitting president can potentially serve for up to 12 years.

Okraku was first elected GFA president in October 2019 after defeating five other candidates. He secured a second term in 2023, winning 117 of the 120 votes cast after standing unopposed.

The possibility of a third term has already generated debate within Ghana's football community.

Former GFA vice-president George Afriyie, who lost to Okraku in the 2019 election and was disqualified from the 2023 contest, has openly opposed the prospect of another Okraku administration. Afriyie has said he would work to prevent Okraku from securing a third term and has called for a change in leadership.

Former Black Stars captain André Ayew has also been linked with a potential future bid, although he has not formally declared his intention to contest the GFA presidency.

For now, however, Okraku is keeping his cards close to his chest.

With the 2027 election still ahead, Ghana's football community may have to wait a little longer before discovering whether the current GFA president intends to defend his position  or finally walk away after two terms.

For Okraku, the message is simple: the time for that decision has not yet arrived.
