Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has underscored the critical role of Ghana’s Civil Service in advancing sustainable national development and ensuring that government policies translate into effective public services for citizens.

Speaking at the 2026 Civil Service Week Celebration and 2025 Awards Ceremony, held under the theme, “The Resetting Agenda for Sustainable Development in Ghana: The Civil Service’s Responsibility,” the Vice President described the Civil Service as a vital pillar of governance that provides continuity across political administrations.

She said the Service preserves institutional knowledge and provides the technical expertise required to transform government policies and programmes into tangible outcomes that improve the lives of Ghanaians.

According to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, the effectiveness and efficiency of the Civil Service have a direct bearing on the quality of services delivered across key sectors, including health, education, agriculture, infrastructure and economic development.

She stressed that the government’s ongoing public sector reforms, improved financial management systems and strengthened expenditure controls must ultimately lead to more efficient institutions and responsive public services.

The Vice President said reforms should not only be measured by policies and administrative processes but also by the extent to which they improve citizens’ experiences when accessing essential government services.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also commended the Head of the Civil Service and other stakeholders for organising the annual celebration, while congratulating recipients of the 2025 Civil Service Awards for demonstrating discipline, integrity, innovation and commitment to public service.

She further acknowledged the contribution of public servants who were not recognised with awards but continue to discharge their responsibilities diligently and professionally.

The Vice President encouraged civil servants to continue treating citizens with dignity and to remain committed to building a professional, accountable and responsive public service capable of supporting Ghana’s development aspirations.

“Public service is a sacred trust placed in our hands by the people of Ghana. As we pursue the Resetting Ghana Agenda, we must remain worthy of that trust,” she stated.

The Vice President reiterated that a strong and effective Civil Service remains essential to the successful implementation of the government’s Resetting Ghana Agenda and the country’s broader pursuit of sustainable development.
