President John Dramani Mahama has firmly dismissed speculation about seeking a third term in office, insisting that his sole focus is on delivering the mandate entrusted to him by Ghanaians and fulfilling the promises that secured his election.
Speaking during his 'Resetting Ghana Tour' of the Volta Region on July 17, the President said he remains committed to serving the single term for which he was elected and has no intention of being distracted by conversations about extending his stay in office.
According to President Mahama, his administration is focused on implementing policies and programmes that will improve the lives of Ghanaians, stressing that every day in office should count toward achieving the government's objectives.
"The people of Ghana gave me a mandate for one term, and I am working hard to meet the promises I made to them," he stated.
The President revealed that he constantly reminds his ministers that their tenure in office is limited and that they must remain committed to delivering tangible results within the time available.
"I always tell my ministers, let's number our days so that we can work harder to meet the promises we made to the Ghanaian people," he said, urging members of his Cabinet to stay focused on implementing the government's development agenda.
His remarks come against the backdrop of renewed public discussion and political commentary over whether he could pursue a third presidential term.
Responding to the debate, President Mahama maintained that the constitutional provisions governing presidential tenure are unambiguous, adding that while he believes the law is clear, anyone seeking a different interpretation is entitled to petition the Supreme Court.
"I've read it over several times. It's exactly what it says. But if they want to ask the Supreme Court, that is their business," he remarked.
Reaffirming his position, the President stressed that he was elected to serve one additional term and remains determined to honour the confidence Ghanaians have placed in him.
"I know that the people of Ghana gave me one additional term, and I'm going to work to meet the trust that they put in me," President Mahama said.
