Sandro Tonali has completed a blockbuster £100 million move from Newcastle United to Tottenham Hotspur, making him the club’s most expensive signing in history. The Italian international joined Spurs on a long-term deal, with the fee comprising £92.5 million upfront and up to £7.5 million in add-ons linked to Champions League qualification.

Tonali’s decision appears to have been sealed after a marathon conversation with manager Roberto De Zerbi, whom the midfielder credits for convincing him to commit to the project. “I spoke to the Head Coach for close to two hours about the Club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham,” he said.

His remarks highlight the persuasive power of De Zerbi’s vision as Tottenham press ahead with one of the most aggressive summer overhauls in recent Premier League history, having now spent beyond £300 million in the market. Tonali insisted that despite interest from several top clubs, his mind was made up early. “People said about there being four or five clubs, there was only one,” he added in a statement.

For Newcastle, the sale marks a painful but lucrative exit for a player who had been central to their midfield before and after serving a 10-month suspension for betting violations. For Spurs, it signals intent to return to the Champions League and compete at the summit of English and European football.

Tonali, 26, will now join his new teammates for pre-season training as Tottenham look to integrate him swiftly ahead of the new campaign.
