The 2024 New Patriotic Party running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo), has described his recent visit to Nigeria as a profound learning experience in leadership and statesmanship, following his participation in events marking the 89th birthday of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
In a reflective statement on Sunday, March 22, 2026, the former Energy Minister recounted spending the first week of March in Nigeria, where he joined dignitaries and thought leaders at an international colloquium themed “The Burden and Blessing of Leadership.”
The event brought together voices from across the continent to examine the complexities of leadership, drawing heavily on Obasanjo’s decades-long career in military service, governance and diplomacy.
According to Dr Opoku Prempeh, the colloquium offered “a rare opportunity to reflect on decades of leadership, service and statesmanship,” emphasising the enduring relevance of experience in shaping effective governance in Africa.
He observed that insights shared during the sessions were both instructive and inspiring, particularly for current and aspiring leaders.
Beyond the formal engagements, Napo highlighted a personal audience with Obasanjo and a guided tour of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, a major archive dedicated to the former Nigerian leader’s legacy.Remove ads
As part of the visit, he presented Obasanjo with a traditional Ghanaian kente cloth, symbolising cultural pride and the deep historical ties between Ghana and Nigeria.
Describing Obasanjo as the “Baba of Africa,” Opoku Prempeh praised his immense contributions to continental development and leadership, noting that such figures serve as invaluable sources of mentorship and guidance.
He ended by reaffirming his commitment to the principles of servant leadership, stating that the experience had strengthened his resolve to serve the Ghanaian people with dedication and humility.
