The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that the World Bank is supporting the Education Ministry with $300 million to convert a number of category ‘C’ schools to ‘B’ and ‘B’ schools to ‘A’.
This forms part of reforms in the education sector. The minister said this on TV3 on Thursday, March 5.

Haruna Iddrisu further said the Mahama administration is going to invest heavily in basic education.
He noted that if you want to get your education right, you must invest in basic education, hence the government’s decision to allocate more resources to the sector.

So now, government policy realigns investment and allocations of financial resources more in favour of basic education,he said.
On the Free SHS programme, Haruna Iddrisu criticised the previous Akufo-Addo administration for not providing adequate infrastructure for the programme.
The Akufo-Addo administration launched the Free SHS programme in 2017. Haruna Iddrisu noted that the education sector did not have adequate infrastructure to accommodate the increase in the number of students.
Haruna Iddrisu said: “Free Senior High School was launched, but the previous government failed to provide expanded infrastructure and lecture theatres to accommodate the exponential increase in student numbers.”
Haruna Iddrisu further revealed plans by the Mahama administration regarding free education.
He said: “We want to introduce free education for all persons with special needs, provide them with the necessary assistive devices, and increase the feeding grant from GHS 8 to GHS 15.”
On the educational reforms, the minister said: “We must work towards de-boardinisation, and the focus should be on rural and peri-urban areas, while in urban areas we focus on reducing boardinisation.”
