The National Communications Authority (NCA) has officially issued a notice to amend the license of Next-Gen Infraco (NGIC), a move set to transform Ghana’s digital landscape.
In a press release dated March 4, 2026, the NCA revealed it is removing the “exclusivity clause” that previously gave NGIC sole rights to provide 5G infrastructure.
The NCA believes opening the market is in the public interest. By ending this monopoly, the Authority aims to:
- Promote Competition: Encouraging more companies to offer 5G will drive innovation.
- Improve Quality: More players mean better service quality and more choices for consumers.
- Faster Expansion: It will accelerate the nationwide rollout of high-speed digital services.
The amendment is expected to take effect in 90 days, following a standard notice period for the licensee to respond.
While the license is being adjusted, NGIC has already begun deploying 5G infrastructure. Currently, there are 49 active sites across the country, though they are heavily concentrated in the capital:
- Greater Accra: 43 sites
- Ashanti Region: 2 sites
- Western, Northern, Bono, and Central Regions: 1 site each
The NCA also noted that NGIC is currently in default regarding its license fee installment payments. The Authority confirmed it is addressing this payment issue according to the legal conditions of the license.
