The Northern Region is set for a major boost in healthcare delivery following plans by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to construct a state-of-the-art maternal block at the Tamale Regional Hospital.

The Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf John, received JICA’s Chief Representative, Suzuki Momoko, on a courtesy call at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

The visit, led by the Regional Health Director and his team, was to brief the Minister on the upcoming intervention aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the region.

Outlining the project details, Ms. Momoko said the maternal block would provide modern facilities to enhance maternal and neonatal care at the Tamale Regional Hospital, a key referral centre serving the Northern Region and adjoining areas.

She noted that the project seeks to improve maternal and child health outcomes, strengthen referral systems, and address challenges posed by ageing and deteriorating infrastructure at the facility.

Construction of the maternal block is expected to commence in September 2026, with completion scheduled within 18 months.

According to JICA, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to support Ghana’s health sector and reduce preventable maternal and infant mortality in underserved regions.

During the meeting, Ms. Momoko also used the opportunity to bid farewell to the Minister ahead of the end of her tenure in Ghana later this year.

She assured him that her successor would continue to build on the existing partnership and ensure the successful implementation of the project.

In his response, Hon. Ali Adolf John expressed appreciation for JICA’s sustained support towards healthcare development in the Northern Region.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Regional Coordinating Council to facilitate the smooth execution of the project.

The Minister further pledged to collaborate with the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to provide the necessary local support to ensure the timely completion of the maternal block, describing the initiative as a significant step towards improving maternal and child healthcare delivery across the region.
