The Ministry of Education has issued a strong warning that any individual, including students, who assaults a teacher in the lawful discharge of their duties will face severe sanctions under the laws of Ghana.
In a statement dated February 19, 2026, and signed by the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, the Ministry expressed grave concern over recent incidents of violence against teachers in some schools across the country.
The Ministry stressed that it takes “strong exception” to such acts and is determined to clamp down on them to prevent further occurrences.
It noted that it has consistently supported legal action against perpetrators of teacher assaults.
Citing recent cases, the Ministry referenced an incident at Kade Senior High Technical School (Kade SHTS), where individuals who assaulted a tutor were arrested and arraigned before the Kade District Court.
The accused persons pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy and assault, and were subsequently convicted and fined.
The Ministry also condemned misconduct recorded during the Super Zonal Sports Competition in the Eastern Region, which involved a reported stabbing and an alleged sexual assault.
According to the statement, the suspects have been arrested and remain in police custody, assisting with investigations, while victims are receiving medical and psychosocial support.
At the West Africa Senior High School, two students and an accomplice have been arraigned before the Adenta Circuit Court in connection with the assault of a teacher.
The accused persons have been remanded into police custody for six weeks pending further court proceedings.
Addressing the matter at the 54th Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed that attacks on teachers would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
He reiterated the government’s resolve to protect teachers and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.
The Ministry aligned itself fully with the President’s position, emphasising its commitment to working closely with law enforcement agencies and the judiciary to ensure justice is served.
Beyond condemning the violent acts, the Ministry assured that concrete steps are being taken to demand justice for victims through the courts and to strengthen measures that safeguard teachers nationwide.
