President John Mahama has extended the government’s condolences to the families of Ghanaian traders who were killed in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso, as the Ghana Armed Forces mobilize to evacuate the injured.

Speaking in Accra, the President confirmed that a group of traders traveling to the neighboring country to purchase tomatoes was ambushed by armed insurgents.

He said this at the opening of the Ghana Tree Crops Investment Summit & Exhibition at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.

On behalf of the government and people, we express our condolences to the families of those who were killed or injured, President Mahama stated.

He revealed that the attack occurred while the traders were conducting business in a village, highlighting the increasing dangers faced by Ghanaian merchants operating near the volatile Sahel region.

Recently, some traders from Ghana travelled to Burkina Faso to buy tomatoes. They were ambushed in a village where they were transacting business. Armed insurgents and terrorist groups attacked them, and unfortunately, we lost a number of our compatriots. Thankfully, a few survived, he said.

The President assured the nation that the government is taking immediate action to bring the wounded back home. He confirmed that the Ghana Armed Forces have been activated to facilitate a medical evacuation.

The Ghana Armed Forces are arranging to medically evacuate the injured from Burkina Faso so they can continue receiving treatment here in Ghana, President Mahama added.
