The Center for Active Learning and Integrated Development (CALID) Ghana has officially commissioned a new six-unit classroom block at Nwodua R/C Basic School in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region. The facility, which includes an ICT center, staff common room, headmaster’s office, and sanitation facilities, is set to transform the educational environment for pupils and staff.

During the commissioning ceremony, Mr. Mohammed Awal Sumani Bapio, Executive Director of CALID, highlighted the challenges faced by the school prior to the project.
When CALID first engaged with Nwodua R/C Basic School, we discovered pupils studying in overcrowded and challenging conditions, with inadequate furniture, he stated. Teachers were doing their best under difficult circumstances, and children were eager to learn, but their environment did not reflect the quality of education they deserve.

The project, which cost approximately GHC 1,417,843.10, was funded by the Japanese Embassy in Ghana through grant assistance. CALID contributed GHC 100,000 for the procurement of five computers and sanitation facilities, while the district assembly committed to providing furniture. The Ghana Education Service (GES) also facilitated the posting of qualified teachers to the school.

Hon. Professor Hamza Adam, Member of Parliament for the area, expressed gratitude for Japan’s support and reiterated the importance of education in development.
Kumbungu is one of the deprived districts in Ghana, with significant infrastructural deficits, he said. We will continue to collaborate with the district assembly and education authorities to ensure the school has the necessary teachers and learning materials to make full use of this new facility.
Madam Yuze Haruko, Head of Political Affairs at the Japanese Embassy, represented the ambassador and emphasized Japan’s commitment to improving access to quality education.
This project is part of Japan’s grant assistance aimed at creating conducive learning environments for children, she explained.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Kumbungu Hon. Yakubu Imoro Kakpagu who officially commissioned the facility, urged community members, school authorities, and stakeholders to take proper care of the infrastructure. He reaffirmed the district assembly’s dedication to partnering with development agencies to enhance education and social infrastructure across the district.
Community members expressed their happiness and gratitude for the development, which is expected to boost educational standards and foster community growth in Nwodua and surrounding areas.
