A police officer by name Bernard Akuffo, has exposed why some colleagues in the Ghana Police Service reportedly celebrated the departure of Dr. Akuffo Dampare from the position of Inspector General of Police (IGP), citing dissatisfaction with his leadership style and policies.
While Dr. Dampare’s tenure is widely recognised for reforms and gaining public approval, the officer stated that his shift in focus from the welfare of officers to pleasing the public created deep resentment within the force.
“I have liked Dr. Akuffo Dampare, and I am convinced that his leadership brought significant changes to the police service and that he genuinely had the service’s best interests at heart,” the officer said. “But he lost the officers’ love when he focused solely on public approval and ignored what made his men happy. That is why many policemen quietly celebrated his exit.”
Among the grievances raised were the suspension of WASSA gatherings, strict transfer policies, restrictions on officers’ public engagements, and the absence of ceremonies honouring fallen colleagues. “It is unreasonable to expect officers to be content with a leader who removes their only source of joy, imposes harsh transfer rules, limits public engagement, and fails to remember fallen heroes,” he said.
The officer noted that while Dampare’s strict approach strengthened public trust, it alienated the rank and file. “He focused only on executing police duties, which made the public like him. But because he was hard on the policemen and didn’t care about what made them happy, he lost the affection of his own men,” he added.
The officer praised current IGP Mr. Yohuno for striking a balance between officers’ welfare and service duties, earning respect from both the public and the force. “IGP Yohuno has learned from the previous administration and has managed to win the hearts of both officers and citizens alike,” he said.

I have liked Dr. Akuffo Dampare, and I am convinced that his leadership has brought significant changes to the police service and that he genuinely has the service’s best interests at heart. However, I believe he lost the officers’ love when he shifted his focus solely to pleasing the public, without considering the welfare of his own men.
That is why I believe many policemen celebrated his departure from the position of Inspector General of Police. It is unreasonable to expect the officers to be content with a leader who removes their only source of happiness and joy, such as WASSA gatherings, imposes strict transfer policies, prohibits officers from public engagement and fails to hold ceremonies in remembrance of fallen heroes.
Dr. Dampare Akuffo focused only on executing police duties, which made the public like him, and because he was hard on the policemen and didn’t care about what made them happy, this also contributed to his dislike within the police service.
I think IGP Mr. Yohuno has learned a lot from the previous administration, and he has managed to balance the welfare of the officers with police duties, earning him the love of both the public and the policemen.
